Our Review Process
How We Test and Review Gifts
At Suggest a Gift, we believe the best gift recommendations come from real-world testing, not just reading product descriptions. Our team personally evaluates products before recommending them, and we’re transparent about our process.
Our Testing Philosophy
We use what we call “The Closet Test” – if a gift would end up forgotten in a closet by February, it doesn’t make our recommendations. We look for items that genuinely improve daily life, spark joy, or solve real problems.
Our 5-Step Review Process
- Real-World Research – We survey gift recipients about what they actually wanted vs. what they received. We track return rates, re-gift patterns, and “still using it” data from past holidays.
- Hands-On Testing – Our team purchases and tests products whenever possible. For larger items or specialized gear, we borrow from friends, rent, or visit stores for hands-on evaluation.
- Expert Consultation – For niche gifts (pilot gear, woodworking tools, cycling equipment), we consult with professionals in those fields to verify quality and usefulness.
- Price-Value Analysis – We compare similar products across price ranges. A gift doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should deliver value that matches or exceeds its price.
- Recipient Perspective – We ask: “Would I be genuinely excited to receive this?” and “Will this still be useful/appreciated in 6 months?” If the answer is no to either, it doesn’t make the cut.
What Makes Us Different
We’re Former Retail Professionals – Our team includes former personal shoppers from Nordstrom with thousands of hours helping real customers find perfect gifts.
We Track Results – We maintain detailed records of gift recommendations and follow up with recipients when possible. This feedback loop constantly improves our suggestions.
We Test For Real Life – Products get tested in messy kitchens, busy home offices, and daily commutes – not just in perfect conditions.
We Update Regularly – Gift trends change. Products get discontinued. We revisit and update our guides throughout the year, not just during holidays.
Our Rating Criteria
When evaluating gifts, we consider:
- Usefulness – Will this actually get used regularly?
- Quality – Is it well-made and durable?
- Wow Factor – Does it create that “perfect gift” moment?
- Value – Does the quality justify the price?
- Versatility – Does it work for different tastes/lifestyles?
- Gift-Worthiness – Does it feel special enough to give as a gift?
Affiliate Disclosure
We participate in the Amazon Associates program and earn commissions on qualifying purchases. This helps support our testing and keeps the site running. However, we never let affiliate relationships influence our recommendations – we only recommend products we genuinely believe make great gifts.
Our rule: If we wouldn’t give it to our own friends and family, we won’t recommend it to you.
